Attendance and Punctuality

Attendance-Absence-and-Punctuality-Policy-2025
All children benefit from regular and punctual school attendance, which is essential to every child’s academic, social and personal development. Being absent from school means a lost learning opportunity. Like you, we want our children to achieve their full potential; therefore, we open our gates at 8:30am for an 8:45am start.
Henhurst Ridge Primary Academy Expectations:
| Attendance | Description | Approximate Days Lost Per Year | Approximate Weeks Lost Per Year |
| 99-100% | Excellent | 0-4 days | Less than 1 week |
| 97-99% | Expected | 5-9 days | 1-2 weeks |
| 96% | Less than expected | 10-13 days | 2-3 weeks |
| 90-95% | Unsatisfactory | 14-18 days | 3-4 weeks |
| Below 90% | Persistent absence | More than 19 days | More than 4 weeks |
Punctuality: It is not only days that matter; every minute counts. Arriving on time (by 8:45am) means children can walk into class with their friends. This increases their sense of belonging and creates a calm start to the day. Specialist teaching such as reading and phonics begins promptly after registration. Your child deserves the very best so it is paramount they are there.
Absence: If you know your child is going to be absent from school for a dental/medical appointment please inform the school office and bring a copy of the appointment card. Wherever possible, appointments should be made outside school hours unless it is an emergency.
Holidays: Government and Staffordshire County Council guidance is that no holidays should be taken during term-time. Our governors support this and as such, the school will not authorise any holidays during term time. If there are exceptional circumstances that require your child to be absent from school for a short period of time, please put your request in writing to the Headteacher, at least two weeks prior.
Sickness: If your child is going to be off sick, please call the school office 01283 372200 before 9:00am on the first day of absence. You will be directed to the school absence, please leave the reason for the absence and when you expect your child to return.
Common illnesses in School and what measures should be taken: The image below contains advice from the Public Health Agency on when children should stay off school and when they can return. This is meant only as a guide and medical advice should be sought from your GP if your child is unwell.
Approach to Lateness
- Any children arriving at school after the register has closed will be asked to register at the office if they have not already done so.
- Pupils arriving between 8:45am – 9:00am will be marked as present but their time of late arrival will be noted and they will be recorded as late on the class register.
- Pupils arriving after 9:00am will be marked as an unauthorised absence until a note/evidence is provided from parents at which time the school will change the mark if it is authorised.
- A final check is made by a member of the office team who visits every classroom to ensure there are no anomalies in the registration marks.
- If punctuality fails to improve, a meeting is offered with the school’s Attendance Team who can provide additional support and set appropriate attendance targets.
- Failure to reach the targets set can result in a referral to the Attendance Officer at the local authority.
